Summary
The Department of Justice reports that Patton State Hospital has a list of failures (re: "Reviewers excoriate Patton's procedures, care," by Nikki Cobb, May 9). I have worked there for 25 years and have personally seen treatment improve 100 percent. We have gone from daily restraints to almost nothing. Language has changed from "patient" to "resident" to "client" to "consumer" to "individual."
Individuals receive the latest medications with fewer side effects. Individuals have many rights and freedoms, with private rooms and 'mall' treatment. They mingle out of the units with others, so nursing staff cannot see everyone and prevent all problems.See the full content of this document

Unrealistic Expectations
This push for normalization is a fantasy, because until there is a cure for mental illness, nothing will stop assaults. Plans for the future should not include unrealistic expectations and demands made by people who have never worked the floor in a maximum- security, criminally insane facility.
