The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors appointed Assistant Sheriff Rod Hoops Tuesday to finish the remaining two- year term of Sheriff Gary Penrod, who is retiring Saturday after 37 years with the department.

Hoops, 52, of Highland, has served as assistant sheriff since 2005, overseeing the patrol, specialized investigations and narcotics divisions. He said one of his first orders of business after he is sworn in on Feb. 3 will be addressing the department's strapped budget and how to do more with less.
