There's no joy in Mudville: Manny Ramirez, the slugger who reinvigorated the Los Angeles Dodgers' playoff hopes last year and helped the team set records this year - 13 straight wins at home to open the season, a modern record - has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

Whether or not, as Ramirez says, the drugs weren't steroids, but rather some of the myriad, even over-the-counter medications on the lengthy don't-take list, doesn't much matter. He should have looked before he took. He quite properly received a 50-day suspension from Major League Baseball on Thursday.
