Despite Recession, Success has Arrived Quickly for Redlands Brewery

REDLANDS - On March 15, 2008, Hangar 24 Craft Brewery cooked up its first 682-gallon batch of beer. At the time, owner and brewmaster Ben Cook was the only employee, brewing for three accounts in the city willing to put his beer on tap. He had only two varieties: Pale Ale and Orange Wheat.

Now the 29-year-old Cook has 18 employees and 250 accounts - six in beer-happy San Diego. He also now brews four additional varieties: Alt-bier, Helles lager, India Pale Ale and Porter. Despite the gloom-and-doom economic atmosphere and some of his own uncertainty, the city has embraced the microbrewery. Cook's beer is booming.
