LAKE ARROWHEAD - When sheriff's deputies gave the marching orders on Oct. 23 to evacuate Mountains Community Hospital as the Grass Valley Fire threatened, a half-dozen staff members stayed on the job.

Susan Lowell, hospital director of patient services, coordinated efforts with employees to keep the hospital open to firefighters that needed to rest and to residents who didn't evacuate.
