ANGELUS OAKS The Thurman Fire doubled in size Friday to 1,000 acres as it advanced toward this mountain hamlet, cresting a mountain ridge and forcing many of the residents who hadn't already evacuated to flee.

It was making a strong push to the north late in the day. Firefighters lost ground in the battle for containment, from 10 percent to 5 percent.

The number of firefighters battling the blaze also doubled to about 650.

Fire officials said 1,300 homes and 200 outbuildings were threatened in Angelus Oaks and Barton Flats. Electrical transmission lines and water-treatment facilities also were at risk, but no outages were reported.
