Summary
Every March, our nation recognizes National Women's History Month. This national celebration and recognition of women's historic achievements began in 1980 when National Women's History Week began with a proclamation from President Jimmy Carter. In 1987, this national celebration was expanded by Congressional Resolution by declaring March as National Women's History Month.
In the last few years, we have had a number of historic firsts to celebrate in conjunction with Women's History Month - the first woman Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, the first major female contender for the President of the United States, then-Sen. Hillary Clinton, and even the first female president of Harvard University.
