On the radio last week, I heard a Latina describe her experience as an anti-illegal-immigration protester, a role that precipitated the breakup of her marriage, drew death threats from radical open- borders advocates and provoked outrage from some fellow Latinos who dub her a coconut brown on the outside, white on the inside and a self-hating racist.
Her experience, although extreme, underscores an unfortunate reality for those who protest illegal immigration: The charge of racism is often on the tongues of their political opponents, some of whom truly believe that those who advocate a crackdown on illegal immigration are motivated by racism. Others cry racism to sabotage a debate on the merits of immigration policy by intimidating political opponents.See the full content of this document
