Latinos Are Not Forsaking Undocumented Immigrants

Summary

A recent article regarding Latinos "souring" on illegal immigration invents a false reality that it then spins into a story that simply is not there. (Re: "Fewer Latinos say illegal immigration helps," Nov. 3.)

The false reality is that the Latino community has turned on undocumented immigrants, and that this somehow leads to a tacit approval of harsher anti-immigrant policies. Nothing could be further from the truth according to the same PEW study cited by The Sun. The explanation for why there is a dramatic decline in the positive effect of unauthorized immigration on Latinos is increasing discrimination and persecution of Latinos, according to the PEW study. The study states that between 2002 and 2010 the percentage of Latinos who believed that discrimination was a major obstacle to their success went from 47 to 61. Add to that the overwhelmingly negative views Latinos have of current anti-immigrant legislation all over the United States, and what emerges is that Latinos have "soured" on illegal immigration because they believe that most anti- immigrant groups paint them as illegal and are waging a war of attrition to displace them all from their communities.
