While the San Bernardino City Fire Department is better known for helping put out fires, two of its firemen, Tom Rubio and Ryan Starling, took a break last Saturday from battling blazes and stirred up a pot-full of mouthwatering heat for the 34th annual California State Chili Championship.

"It's our fourth time here," said Rubio. "We're the only fire department in the county that loves to come out and cook a pot of chili for a little competition. Plus, this is our community and we love coming out and supporting all its events."
