Glossary

Adult stem cells A cell that performs a specific function that can be found in tissue such as in the liver, the brain and bone marrow. Adult stem cells can renew themselves and (with certain limits) change to yield all the specialized cell types of the tissue from which it originated. Blastocyst A embryo of about 150 cells that has not been implanted in a uterus. It consists of a sphere made up of an outer layer of cells (the trophectoderm), a fluid- filled cavity (the blastocoel), and a cluster of cells on the interior (the inner cell mass). Cell division The method by which a single cell divides to create two cells. This continuous process allows a population of cells to increase in number or maintain its numbers.
