Officials at a Southern California nonprofit that provides support to terminally and critically ill children and their families hope to establish the first end-of-life children's hospice in Southern California in the year ahead.

The hospice, one of many the organization plans to build nationwide, is to fulfill a need that is long past due in the care of critically ill children, said Laurie Kotas, founder of the Anaheim-based nonprofit Kristie's Foundation.
