John McDonald never spent much time in one place, circling the globe as a Naval officer and Merchant Marine. But despite his many travels, McDonald always thought of his family and friends back home.

"My brother had been everywhere," said his sister, Kathleen Worth. "But no matter what he was doing, or where he was, John would always find time to send a beautiful quilt back to our mother, or write one of us a letter."
