Again, we are embroiled in the separation of church and state argument. The phrase in the First Amendment, ''Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,'' was intended to prevent the establishment of an official, state-supported church, as had been the case in 11 of the original 13 colonies.
Not only did these governments provide financial support to an official church, but many denied suffrage and full legal protection to nonmembers. Court and Atheism
It was only with the Lemon v. Kurtzman decision in 1971 that the court began changing the rules and establishing atheism as our state religion. This is the same official religion supported by the former Soviet states, and we know what happened to them. Worse, we also see the trouble most of them are having because of the lack of respect for the rule of law this religion engenders. Are we to follow in their footsteps?
