The image is arresting: A shiny, chrome kitchen faucet is set against a vivid blue background, a single drop of water stretches down, suspended in mid-air. Life, we infer, hangs in that oh-so- precarious balance; without water we are lost.

That inference is precisely the one that a coalition of anti- immigration groups hopes we will draw from their nationwide advertising campaign. This particular advertisement is one of a series that is promoted by the niftily titled America's Leadership Team for Long Range Population-Immigration-Resource Planning, with funding from the American Immigration Control Foundation, Californians for Population Stabilization, Federation of American Immigration Reform, NumbersUSA and Social Contract Press; and it has appeared in major magazines, newspapers and electronic media.
