As San Bernardino gears up for its Bicentennial Celebration, in 2010, it's a good time to look over the past two centuries at the plethora of pioneer families that helped shape this city and region. One of the truly prominent clans of the 19th Century was the Lugo family.

Born at California's Mission San Antonio de Padua in 1775, Don Antonio Lugo went on to become one of the most prominent and wealthy men in the state, despite not having any formal education. In fact, he couldn't read or write.
