Nearly $1 million in donations for families of five firefighters who died in the Esperanza Fire are suddenly in tax-law limbo, a United Way official in Hemet said Thursday.

Internal Revenue Service restrictions may affect more than $960,000 in United Way donations solicited in part by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors, said Bob Duistermars, president of Central County United Way.
