Act Now On Nutrition in Schools

Summary

Ask any teacher or parent, and they will tell you that the food kids eat has a direct impact on their performance in school. Unfortunately, many children in America are not getting the nutritious food they need to reach their full potential. The truth is that the food these youngsters put on their plates today affects their health tomorrow, and the future of our nation for many years to come.

With almost one out of every three children overweight or obese, childhood obesity is rapidly becoming an epidemic that threatens the safety and prosperity of the United States. Poor nutrition not only leads to health problems, it also seriously inhibits our younger generation's ability to excel academically, as well as their future potential to serve their country. Consider a report from our nation's military leaders that showed that 1 in 3 Americans aged 17 to 24 were not fit to join the armed forces because of their weight. Or consider the fact that obesity-related health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and high blood pressure are on the rise and estimates show that they are costing us $147 billion per year. With issues such as these at stake, our school cafeterias must be the front line in the struggle to create a healthy future for our kids.
