Woman's Death Linked to Gang Rivalry
RIALTO - A Yucaipa woman may have been shot to death by her ex- boyfriend, a Chula Vista gang member, because she was associating with rival gang members, police said Wednesday. News of a possible motive behind the Jan. 31 slaying of 22-year- old Stephanie Ann Lenczyk came on the heels of reports that two more suspects have been arrested in connection with her slaying.
Rialto Dispute Puts Cloud Over Youth Event
RIALTO - Randall Lopez may have picked the wrong place to hold the second leg of his "Weekend Course in Community Involvement." One of the locations for the event - aimed at involving teenagers in the community and promoting human rights - has in the past run afoul of city codes that limit the use of the venue.
A new Department of Homeland Security report about two Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a drug smuggler directly contradicts key conclusions reached by the department's own investigator on the case. The report also does not support assertions about the agents made by the department's Office of Inspector General to several members of Congress during a private meeting last fall.
REDLANDS - Police arrested a pyrotechnician late Tuesday on suspicion of operating a fireworks factory out of his home and storing hundreds of pounds of potentially explosive materials. Police said David Matthews, 43, had about 400 pounds of ammonium nitrate packed in his garage and an outdoor shed. The substance, by itself, is not dangerous, but could be explosive when combined with fire and pressure.
SAN BERNARDINO - Michael Moore learned how to handle a handgun by the time most kids are taking the training wheels off their bikes. Now 13, he's spent time in Juvenile Hall. He knows what it's like to be cuffed and locked down, told when to shower, fend for himself in an institutional jungle teeming with older toughs.
Airlift Wing Vets Connect at Cafe
If you stop for breakfast at the Airport Express Caf on the first Tuesday of any month, you'll hear the stories fly fast and furious as any mortar fire. Veterans of the 63rd Military Airlift Wing gather monthly at the San Bernardino eatery to swap anecdotes, razz each other, laugh and commiserate.
REDLANDS - It's ironic that more than 50,000 documents and artifacts valued at hundreds of millions of dollars are housed here in remembrance of the ultimate rags-to-riches story. The Lincoln Shrine, celebrating its 75th anniversary this month, features 3,800 square feet of space dedicated to telling the story of our nation's 16th president.
