Petition Ruling Will Stymie Voter Participation
Petitions are being thrown out right and left of late, on everything from a police-backed initiative in Rialto that failed to ensure signature gatherers lived in the city, to referendums on hillside housing developments in Loma Linda that left out key details. The failed measures are frustrating not only to their backers, but to voters who are cheated out of having a say at the ballot box. But while it's important for petition backers to dot all their I's and cross all their T's...
In response to the March 28 editorial, "Tribe deserves street access," the author of the piece obviously hasn't been to the site. The tribe isn't building any homes (yet). The property in question is still in use as parking lots for the casino. "What amounts to a few hundred yards of road" is a quality of life issue to those who live near it.
Constant Squabbling Undermines Prop 49
Virtually everyone agrees that after-school programs benefit kids. Such programs keep our children safe, off the streets and engaged in activities. A recent study backed that up by concluding children who went to after-school programs were less likely to participate in criminal behavior. But in California, it seems, that's where the agreement ends. Nearly four years ago, California voters endorsed Proposition 49, a measure to fund after-school programs across the state with $550 million....
