Family, Friends Demand Signal Light

The family and friends of Ashlee Marron -- the 20-year- old who was killed Jan. 8 in a collision in the Greenspot Road and Weaver Street intersection -- claim the city of Highland has simply ignored their demands for a signal light before the scheduled 2009- 2010 date. Don Houghtaling, a close friend of the Marron's, said he has spoken at every city council meeting since the accident and the council has consistently refuted his claims about the danger of the intersection and Greenspot R...

'Citizen of the Year' Contributed Much to Community

One wouldn't guess from the exterior of the stark, slate gray warehouse, but inside, there exists a landscape of ceramic creations in vibrant colors and in every imaginable size and shape. Amid the constant hum of working kilns, lehrs and other machinery, California Design Works owner Marty Steinbrecher, 59, surveyed his two-story ceramic and giftware manufacturing company with satisfaction.

Little Leagues Providing Opportunities for Youth

Baseball is a sport entrenched in American culture, and Little League has a long-established history in the Highland area. With Highland Little League encompassing the east side of the city, Civitan Little League covering north Highland into the Del Rosa area, and Central Little League reaching into the south side, every youth in the area has the opportunity to find a home team.

Miles Separate Them, but Family Ties and Passion Unite Them

For about 40 of the 52 weekends each year, forget about finding Russell and Terri Bliss at home. They're on the road again in pursuit of speed, points and passion. From their San Bernardino shop, the racing couple will haul the Kittle Motorsports sprint car throughout the Southwest and north: the Perris Auto Speedway, Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, and as far north as Skaggit, Wash.

Arroyo Valley Army Jrotc Gives a Gold Star Performance

Second Lt. John Cruz' Army green uniform is impeccable; his black shoes shine to brilliance, and ribbons and braids adorn his uniform. He stands ramrod straight as he answers questions with a, "yes sir,'' or "no sir.'' And when asked, the 17-year-old San Bernardino Arroyo Valley High junior leaves little doubt about his future plans after high school.

Twice a month, Studio 24 accepts public reservations for elegant lunchtime dining. The pseudo-restaurant provides guests with a luxurious atmosphere complete with candlelight, fresh flower centerpieces, gourmet meals and some of the most well- mannered and unpretentious wait staff one will ever meet. Kathy Klicka began opening the doors to her special-day classroom - Room 24 - at Redlands High School about 15 years ago to create an opportunity for her special-education students ...

Joe Loya, author of "The Man who Outgrew his Prison Cell: Confessions of a Bank Robber,'' riveted an audience of more than 40 at the Feldheym Central Library for nearly two hours, infusing his tips for budding novelists with authentic tales of violence, criminality and redemption. The bespectacled 44-year-old novelist, playwright, essayist and journalist with a history that includes stabbing his abusive father and dozens of bank robberies, was raw, incisive and often funny.

When One Career Ends, He Simply Reinvents Himself

A butcher, baker and a candlestick maker are about the only occupations that Paul Oliver of Yucaipa hasn't tried. But don't bet against Oliver someday trying his hand at those professions as well. The 74-year-old has been "reinventing myself for most of my life,'' he said.

Museum Features Salton Sea Exhibit

The San Bernardino County Museum is doing well. A lot of visitors find the site of great interest, and as a result some reorganizing must be done in the near future. "In fact, we're having to upgrade a lot of the galleries soon,'' said Jennifer Reynolds, marketing specialist with the institution. "But that's after we've shown our new exhibit downstairs.''
