FONTANA The nightmare for Lilia Leano and her family ended late Sunday when a police detective brought her some good news: Noah Samuel Leano, her 1-year-old son who was taken in a carjacking earlier that day, was found safe and unharmed, still in his car seat in the back of her Ford Expedition.

New Law Helping Revive Cases Database Credited with 'Cold Hits' Hike

A new state law requiring convicted felons to submit DNA samples to a state database has resulted in 14 DNA matches from crime scenes in San Bernardino County. Since January, the sheriff's crime lab has received 14 "cold hits' from a national FBI database known as Combined DNA Index System linking suspects to unsolved crimes, said Craig Ogino, director of the sheriff's crime lab.

'Cold Hits' Help Bring Closure

Since January, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Crime Lab has received 14 DNA matches linking suspects to crimes. The DNA matches, referred to as "cold hits,' are attributed to Proposition 69, a California law passed in November requiring convicted felons to submit DNA samples to the state Department of Justice. Among some of the cases now finding closure and the circumstances surrounding them:

Area Base May House Hundreds

About 400 people dislocated by Hurricane Katrina are scheduled to fly in to March Air Force Base on Thursday, where they will be housed for 90 days, according to Riverside County Supervisor Marion Ashley. At an AFL-CIO-sponsored Labor Day event in San Bernardino on Monday, Ashley said a hangar at the Riverside base would be used for relief efforts.
